Flowers for You

Dear You…. I don’t think a name is needed as words have a better way of painting a masterpiece at times. So allow me to paint this and I hope you can see it as vividly as your mind can create. I have spent the past 13 days sharing flowers from my garden to a few individuals who have been impactful in my life. Nobody knew it was coming… almost like a floral delivery from out of the blue. You receive the flowers and your mind quickly races. Your heart starts beating a little bit faster and you hold back a little smile as you start your detective work to figure out who they are from. If you’re lucky there is a card attached… other times there are tiny little context clues from chats here and there that have you asking around. It’s less about the flowers themselves and more about the person who sent them. It’s about knowing that they were thinking about you because they care and appreciate you. So it’s your turn to receive these flowers… because I know you deserve them.

You are the quiet type in the public eye but behind the scenes the amount of work you put into everything is beyond impressive. You don’t care for actual fresh cut flowers much because of allergies… but flowers and plants are interconnected. You remind me so much of the bamboo tree. According to legend, the Chinese bamboo tree takes five years to grow. During the first four years, it barely grows at all, staying underground and seemingly doing nothing. It is only in the fifth year that the bamboo tree suddenly shoots up, growing as much as 80 feet in just six weeks. You weren’t hiding after all when you look at it this way. I was wrong with my assumptions of why you moved the way that you do. I know now that you were simply growing your roots to create a strong foundation so when it was your time to break through, you’d be unstoppable.

You and I built a bond rooted in trust and loyalty. And as often as those words are tossed around when you dig deep the true meaning is powerful. Loyalty implies a faithfulness that is steadfast in the face of any temptation to renounce, desert, or betray. The bamboo tree really tests one’s trust and loyalty. It’s easy to give up when you don’t see any major changes in year 3 or 4 both good or bad. But having that tiny mustard seed of faith is all that is needed because come year 5… you see the magnificent sight spring forth. Knowing finally that all of the unseen hard work has come into fruition.

There are many beliefs and parables about the Chinese bamboo tree. The main takeaway for me is the one that teaches us lessons about patience, faith, perseverance, growth and development and importantly… human potential. Like any flower or plant, to flourish the Chinese bamboo tree requires nurturing – water, fertile soil and sunshine. I know at times the rains came flooding in…. in the form of tears and hurt. Misunderstanding and tough conversations that stretched us in ways we couldn’t fully comprehend. But with all dualities (yin and yang) in this experience we call life… the sunshine would always show back up. The amazing days would be full of deep belly laughs, talks about space and time, technology and new interesting discoveries. And you already had the nutrient rich soil because you built it over time. From an additional set of pillows, lighting, artwork, chairs, candles and more, Home is the soil where the unconditional love resides. Home is where the heart is. Be it here or there… you carry ‘home’ with you in your heart and it makes anywhere you go feel of comfort and peace. So the bamboo needs all three… the water, soil and the sunshine.

2023 a major shift happened. It’s like the opposing forces of chaos and uncertainty came in to dig up the soil and scatter the roots. But they didn’t know that the bamboo was still growing underground and more time was needed. Nothing was the same but in all of that mayhem, I learned so much about myself and about love. I learned that loving myself fully and speaking my truths is at the core of who I am. I learned that other people’s hurtful words and actions are a perspective of their viewpoints and how they see the world around them. I learned that my strategic optimism has opened up so many doors for me financially and in my personal life. I learned to let go and stop holding on so tight to people and things I can not control. And most importantly, I learned that the light I carry within is not for everyone. And that I need to protect at all costs so others can’t dim it.

So I want to say THANK YOU. Thank you for being the one who showed me what love after heartbreak could feel like. Thank you for the adventures and trying new things outside of your comfort zone and letting fear know there was no place for it in the equation. Thank you for believing in me and supporting my business dreams and aspirations. Thank you for sharing your heartbeat with me. The one that is changing and growing stronger daily and the one that is no longer here. Thank you for giving yourself the keys to the driver seat. For putting yourself first and taking care of your needs. Watch out Lewis Hamilton… there is a new driver in town. You deserve to call the shots and lead your life down the roads of your choice. Guilt free and full of overwhelming happiness that only you have the API keys to harness.

So on this Valentine’s Day I wish you nothing but love. I know it’s a Wednesday and a work day, but it’s important to take a moment just to quietly sit and feel the the air enter and exit your lungs. And in that zen silence remind yourself how short the time we have really is… and to make each moment count.

I look forward to see you break through from the distance. Everything happens in its own time… I know it’s coming and you just have to trust and believe. You’ll shoot up 80 feet or taller just like the Chinese bamboo tree. And it will be beautiful, full of strength and of course a vibrant shade of green. Just like my favorite color! I’ll be cheering you on even if you can’t hear me but I’m sure you’ll be able to feel it. I believe in you… and you deserve all the flowers in the world. You got this.

Your Flowers…. XOXO

Bouquet of Flowers

The wonderful thing about flowers is that you can mix and match different flowers together to create a beautiful bouquet. Sometimes it’s almost shocking how amazing certain flower combinations truly come together. So for this 2nd to last entry of my ‘Your Flowers’ series… I needed to add in a mixed batch to create something extra special.

April - My beautiful and talented friend. Your raw talent blows me away and I always love to see what you’re working on next. I want to thank you for being a part of not one but two of my holiday albums. Your voice is so uniquely angelic and I am so blessed to have been able to have you grace each album with your golden vocals. We have shared a photography studio space, collaborated on ideas and so much more. I love that we have built a safe space to let our guards down with each other. I will forever have your back and support you. The journey is just beginning… let’s see what unfolds next!

Mayline - MY GIRL! I would go way back but let’s start more recently first. We shared a very long night of deep conversations that not only helped heal me… but allowed us to connect on a different level. Who would have thought that sharing truths would allow for fear to melt away and clarity to come into focus. Thank you for being awake at that ridiculous time of night and creating that space. Now let’s talk abou the past a bit! Girl… THANK YOU for trusting in me to capture your wedding day! Your brother helped make it rain cherry blossoms… and those photos are still some of my favorite to date! You make every party you attend so hype and honestly we all feel it when you’re not there. I love our bond! And let’s not forget the random Christmas Caroling all in the name of banana bread. Thank you for loving me and supporting me all these years!

Sable - I still can’t believe it took 23487 years (Maybe I exaggerated the numbers) to finally start hanging out. To be fair, I hardly hang out in Seattle. I’m normally out because I’m working! I love your work ethic and your powerful drive for success. I will never forget jumping into a pool in Vancouver, Canada with the lashes I bought for your line you carried and instantly being upset. My glamorous lashes were waterboarded and you said “Don’t worry, I got you” and sent me a new pair. (Please bring back your lash line!!!) I want to thank you for supporting the Northwest Naturals Expo as a beauty/makeup vendor years ago! Your team stayed busy and I loved to see it. I’m thankful for your kind heart and the ability to show up for your friends and loved ones.

Ryann - My not so much Hawaiian friend who is actually Mexican but I make things up sometimes.! My goodness, the years have really zoomed by hasn't it?? One of the most wonderful parts of these years going by was the ability for us to reconnect and build our friendship. You are the best ‘bartender’ that I know! Hehehe… thank you for showing up for me to make things happen. My braids may or may not have gotten snagged and you watched the entire thing to remind me for years to come. Thank you for showing up to my Expos with your daughter. The fact that she thinks I’m somewhat cools makes everything in the world so much better. (Please reference my braids getting stuck)…. I picture that of myself. Someone just trying to make it through the day without the snags! I don’t think there is a time we have been together that I haven’t ended up laughing so hard that my head starts to hurt. You’re honestly HILARIOUS and it’s so effortless. You’re a wonderful mother and your kiddos have no idea their mom is a rockstar! But one day, they certainly will. I appreciate you more than you know… so here is my efforts to express that to you.

All of you ladies are unique and I want to say THANK YOU! You all have the mom thing on lockdown. You handle business like bosses. And honestly… you’re all so gorgeous! (Do I even have unattractive friends?? Thank you God for blessing me with the finest bunch around!) Also, I’m hysterically laughing because maybe it’s me. My hair is in a tiny bun on the top of my head. MAYBE you all are so pretty to balance out my bun-life! I’m so sorry!!! I’ll do better!!

Sharing these flowers with you all….. XOXO

Jesse's Flowers

Jesse…. “Go DJ… that’s my DJ…. Go DJ… That’s my DJ”. You are the absolute TRUTH when it comes to creating a vibe that will allow everyone to dance and connect. I still don’t remember exactly how it happened, but I do know that when Angela Mose introduced me to you the world became a better place. The ‘Dream Team’ was created…. and we have been unstoppable ever since. You are more than a friend Jesse… you’re officially part of my chosen family.

You have been a part of so many transformational moments in my life. My mom absolutely adores you and honestly I can’t think of anybody in my life who doesn’t ask about you the moment I start talking about an event. What other Samoan DJ plays Afrobeats with such ease?? YOU ARE THE BEST at what you do. And I want to be here to remind you of that.

The way you can read a room and create an atmosphere that has everyone moving is a true gift. Music is a universal language because we can not only hear it, but we feel it. And you have mastered the gift of making people feel alive when you’re behind the turntables.

I am so thankful to have you in my life. Thank you for being the DJ at my very first colored themed party and so many others. Thank you for being the DJ for my brother’s spectacular wedding celebration. Thank you for all the projects we have worked on. Which includes writing out proposal for HOURS at a Denny’s. Thank you for the laughs and random moments when nothing makes sense and we laugh even more. Thank you for the referrals and recommendations you have sent my way. I will alway speak your name in rooms to let others know about your talents. You take your ideas and turn them into a reality. Your kiddos will look back one day and realize just how cool their Dad is. You’re an amazing father Jesse!

I will say, I still feel some type of way for not getting my t-shirt at the last festival… but you know what. It’s all good! I’ll remember that at my next Expo! LOL… kidding… I got you covered! Let’s continue to create epic events for the community to come together and enjoy. I’m so honored to be your friend. Dream team to the world!!!

Your Flowers… XOXO

Sean's Flowers

Sean… where do I start!! I want to give you your flowers for being a REAL one! I’m going to brag about you real quick. The way you capture photos has always taken my breath away. YOU ARE SO DOPE!! I know I have asked more times than I can count about what camera you’ve used to capture an image or what lens. At times I would have to tell myself to stop asking but I would still go ahead and drop a question anyways. You’re honestly gifted with a camera in your hands and seeing the world through your perspective has been quite beautiful.

You being a #TechBro and having an eye for composition makes sense. (Now that I’m thinking about it, is there a cool phrase/hashtag for women in the tech field?) Your love for travel is inspiring. Allow me to apologize again for going to White Sands National Park in New Mexico without you. I’ll put together a group trip with photographers and we can go back and capture the magic of the dunes.

Over the past few years the insights and perspectives you’ve given me have been golden. There have been times I was going through it and you’d be calm and say just the right things to level me back out again. I want to thank you for being a listening ear always. Thank you for all your kind words that would come at the most perfect times. Thank you for encouraging me to want more and do more.

You’re an amazing man and a great uncle. Still can’t believe you’re a twin… I’ll forever be fascinated by twins let’s be honest here. You have a gift of making any cocktail or food item look mouthwatering. I still can’t figure out how you do it!

Thank you for being in my life and staying true to who you are. I look forward to our adventures in the future!!

Your Flowers.. XOXO

Bola's Flowers

Bola!! My girl… my fashion sistah…. my sounding board…. my hype woman…. I want to give you your flowers. The story of how we met is totally in sync with the rise of technology. And now look a us!!! So let’s take a moment to thank instagram for bringing us together. You were the fashionable lady who lived in New York…and I was the super random lady in Seattle. And we managed to create a bond that can only be described as divine.

We travel together, laughed together, walked on a dark beach in Mexico while a small shell punctured your foot together and let me not forget the MAJOR one. You brought me into the folds of the Miss Nigeria USA pageant world. You trusted in who I was and introduced me to your friends/team and the rest is history. (Let me not get emotional… I love those contestants and I always get sad when pageant week is over!!!)

Thank you for flying from Houston to Seattle to help me with the Northwest Naturals Expo. Honestly having you here was great. Even when we are beefing in the car about me being an ‘EventZilla’…. I’m working on it. The best part about that moment was going inside the restaurant and eating amazing food together. Yes…. and the bananas. WHY WERE THERE SO MANY BANANAS that weekend you were here? First at the Amazon building and then at the restaurant to help save my legs! LOL!

You have one to the biggest hearts I’ve ever come across. The way that you care about your friends and family is beautiful to watch and see. You are your mother’s child… she raised you to be a strong, radiant and compassionate woman. So I thank her as well for all that she instilled within you as you carry on her legacy.

Your smile lights up any room you walk into. And your laugh is so contagious. Thank you for not abandoning me as we walked the streets of Brooklyn while I was shouting out… ‘BROOKLYN’ in the worst New York accent ever. You just walked a few paces in front of me so I wouldn’t bring you too much shame and embarrassment. But you didn’t run away… and that’s all that matter.

I love you Bola and I am thankful you are in my life. God knew what he was doing when he aligned us to become friends! I give you flowers today, tomorrow and always. Let’s continue to create new memories in foreign lands. Thank you for being you!

Your Flowers…. XOXO

Tierra's Flowers

Tierra… you are phenomenal! I have to shower you with flowers because I have learned so much from you in the past 10+ years of our friendship. Not only have I been able to watch you grow life and bring into the world two of the most beautiful little girls. I have watched you embody the definition of resilience. However, in your version of the definition there is so much grace and beauty intertwined within the roots and fibers of the word. You amaze me, because you have accomplished so much and impacted so many people simply by being yourself.

You certainly know how to throw a fun party. From one party girl to the next…. it’s honestly one of your many gifts and I’m in awe!! You dream it… you theme it… you make it happen. I always love hearing your ideas of what you’ll work on next. There are not that many people who can pivot the way that you do. And somehow… everything you touch just blooms and grows. So let me just say what needs to be said….

YOU HAVE A GREEN THUMB! You grow your own veggies and fruits and I still can’t believe how cool that is. Your brand Hungry AF Vegan is so you! I have tasted so many of your vegan dishes and they are flipping good!! Don't get me started on that lasagna or the chili. (Was the chili vegan??? if so…. HOW!?!?!) Yes, I’m your #1 vegan hater at times. I still don’t understand why they give meat inspired names to plant based dishes. Like, can’t they just create new words? Those young kids are always making up new things… why can’t vegans!?! Okay let me get back onto topic. Your cookbooks are the best. And yes, I’m going to link that right here so people can experience it as well. Hungry AF Vegan Cookbook

I want to thank you for being an original. Your energy is unique and I know nothing but greatness will continue to pour into your life. Any obstacles you’ve experienced were only stepping stones to get you closer to the sky. And you know what they say… the sky is the limit. But we both know there is so much more beyond just that. Thank you for loving holidays and being the reason why this past Christmas felt so magical for me. All that content… it was truly a festive season with your cheer!!! Thank you for trusting in me to capture the memories of you and the girls over the years. Thank you for moving closer to me… so story time can last longer and we can laugh and cry at the wildness life tosses our way. You are truly a gem… and I want you to know you’re talented, authentic and beautiful from the inside out!

Your Flowers…. XOXO

Jeannawade's Flowers

My dear sweet friend… I want to give you these flowers! I used to think you had super powers to walk around our college campus and seemingly never feel the actual cold. Everyone would be bundled up to head to ‘Mikes’ and you… you’d be just fine. I’m still impressed but such a feat. Little did we know you had the heart of Te Fiti burning from within! It all makes sense now!!!

The fact that our friendship connected me into the Polynesian community will always be a reason to celebrate. THANK you for bringing me along to the Polynesian Club at Washington State University. My African self honestly had no reason to be there or be voted into a leadership role. However, that Polynesian Night that was planned was epic… was it not!?!? I think yes, and I met some of the coolest people. And that stemmed into years later. Look at us now!!

You have been there for ALL of the varies waves that we sailed across. From the piggyback squat challenge during my Holiday party to me throwing you a baby shower because I had to work on your actual baby shower day. So who wouldn’t throw another one and invite the college crew to celebrate you? I have loved capturing your growing family throughout the years. You are the cool mom x 100! Yes, I always joke that I want you to adopt me so I can join in on the fun crafts, activities and adventures you take your kiddos on. You have taught me about my nervous reaction quirk. I still can’t believe I had no idea I laugh when in tough situations, but it makes sense when people say… “you’re always laughing and smiling”. It’s a broken response people… it’s not normal! LOL! I’m working on it!

Girl… you’re the best social media manager the Northwest Naturals Expo has EVER had! I can always count on you to get the best footage each year. You have supported me on crazy ideas since day one. I remember the event that was thrown at WSU for the ‘lil Hommies… who would have thought things would continue to build and so strong afterwards. You mean the world to me and our friendship is one of the cornerstone pieces that has helped me become the woman I am today.

I must add in… my Pink Summer Soirée party in 2018…. the way you danced and lived it up that night will always be burned into my memory. That and we have video footage that will always remind us of the fun from that night. It’s fun to see how the parties have evolved over the years and how they are always enhanced when your energy is present there.

Thank you for being in my inner circle. Thank you for never giving up on yourself when the world seemed to be coming for you. Thank you for choosing me to capture the milestones in your family’s life. Thank you for praying for me. Thank you for being the baddest Samoan/Dominican mix I have EVER met! I love you… and you deserve all the flowers!

Your Flowers… XOXO

Shaundra's Flowers

Shaundra!! My beautiful, kind hearted and compassionate friend. Let me rephrase that, you are one of my best friends and my goodness…. we have grown so much together over the years. One thing that has remained the same is the way we connect. I can’t quite put my finger on it… but I do believe it’s your authentic way of being that has kept up so close.

We have shared laughs that has caused our ribs to hurt and also tears that flowed like a river. And in all of those moments in between I found peace and safety within your thoughts, words and actions. You find a way to love the broken pieces within people and believe in them when they lose their way. You’ve taught me so much about compassion and forgiveness. It normally starts with the… “Well…what if” statements and then my mind starts racing to see alternative perspectives I otherwise would have missed.

We have shared so many holidays together. Always such fun memories to look back on. One stand out moment was watching Elemental with you. That day was HEAVY and somehow a Disney movie made so many things click within my mind. I love our adventures together. It’s always something random happening that makes it even more interesting.

Thank you for seeing me for who I am throughout the years. Thank you for being my bestie and believing in my wild ideas and projects. Thank you for showing up to my events and participating in them. Thank you for loving others with your whole heart and leading by example. Thank you for taking a picture of your basketball shoes in a trash can that will forever make me laugh because you blamed them for the bad game. Thank you for our monthly adventures. Thank you for being consistent and dependable. Thank you for existing in this realm and timeline with me. I love you more than words can express!!

Your Flowers … XOXO
